Government exams and jobs for architects and town planners (India, 2026)
Architects and town planners in government are recruited in three ways: state public service commissions for town planning cadres, central and PSU organisations that advertise their own posts, and institutes that hire faculty. Eligibility differs by notice, so this guide lists only examples APJ has checked against the official notice, and shows where to verify each one.
Last updated: 20 Oct 2026. Examples are from official notices linked on each job page. Dates change; confirm on the notice before applying.

How to read the eligibility line
- Degree. Check the exact degree named. “B.Arch”, “B.Plan”, “Master’s in Town or Urban Planning” and “B.E./B.Tech (Civil)” are different requirements, and some notices accept several.
- Council of Architecture registration. Many architect posts require CoA registration at the time of applying or joining. Read the notice for the exact wording.
- Experience. The notice counts experience from a stated date and often needs experience in a named type of organisation (government, PSU or private). Count it from that date, not from today.
- Age limit. Check whether it is counted from the last date or a fixed date, and what relaxations apply.
- Selection. Some posts are selected by exam only, others by exam and interview, and some by interview and documents alone.
Where to check the next cycle
- UPSC and central recruitment: check upsc.gov.in and the employer’s own careers page for each post. APJ does not list UPSC or CPWD eligibility until a notice is read in full.
- State commissions: check the state public service commission’s website for town planning posts. The state’s urban development department often publishes the cadre details. Worked example: MPPSC Assistant Town Planner, Advt 02/2026.
- PSUs, metro and institutes: check the careers page, and for institutes, the faculty advertisement section.
- GATE: some PSU and institute recruitments use a GATE score for shortlisting. Read the exact clause in the notice, since not all do. See the GATE AR exam guide.
Frequently asked questions
Which government exam is best for an architect?
There is no single best exam. Architects are hired by state planning cadres, metro and PSU organisations, and institutes, each with different rules. Pick the employers whose eligibility matches your degree and experience, then track their notices.
Do I need GATE to get a government architecture job?
No. Some PSU and institute notices use GATE for shortlisting, but many do not. Check the specific notice.
Can a B.Arch graduate apply for town planner posts?
Some notices list B.Arch among accepted degrees, and others do not. Read the exact qualification line for each post.
How do I know a notice is genuine?
Apply only through the employer’s official website or the portal named in the notice. APJ does not accept applications and links only to official sources.
