CoA Registration for Architects Applying to Government Jobs

Council of Architecture (CoA) registration is the professional licence line that many government and PSU architect recruitments treat as essential — not optional branding. If a notification says “registered with the Council of Architecture under the Architects Act, 1972,” your B.Arch degree alone is usually not enough at document verification. Confirm process and status only on the official CoA site: coa.gov.in.

What CoA registration is (and is not)

CoA registration establishes that you are entitled to practise as an architect under Indian law. It is separate from:

  • Your university degree / provisional certificate
  • GATE AR scorecard
  • State PSC registration numbers
  • Company offer letters or internship certificates

Recruiters ask for CoA because architect posts involve statutory responsibility for architectural work. Planning-only posts may instead reference planning institute credentials (for example ITPI pathways) — do not mix the two.

When government notifications require CoA

Typical wording includes “must be registered with the Council of Architecture” or “valid CoA registration certificate.” You will see this pattern on central/PSU architect grades more often than on pure town-planning assistant grades.

If CoA is listed under essential qualifications, applying “while registration is in process” is risky unless the notice explicitly allows provisional proof and a deadline to submit the final certificate.

Practical checklist before you apply

  1. Log in to your CoA account on coa.gov.in and confirm registration is active.
  2. Download / scan the certificate the employer asks for (some want registration number entered in the form; some want PDF upload).
  3. Match spelling of your name across CoA, degree, Aadhaar, and application form.
  4. If you are a fresh graduate, check whether the notice accepts provisional CoA enrolment and until when.
  5. Do not invent fee amounts or step counts from memory — CoA processes and fees are updated on the portal; follow the current instructions there.
  6. Keep a spare colour PDF under 200–300 KB if portals reject large scans.

Planners and dual-qualified candidates

If you hold both architecture and planning credentials, read which identity the post is hiring for:

  • Architect post → CoA line usually controls.
  • Town planning post → planning degree / PG / ITPI pathway usually controls; CoA may be irrelevant or only “desirable.”

Can I apply without CoA if I have B.Arch?

Only if the notification’s essential qualification does not require CoA. Many architect posts will reject you at DV without it.

Is CoA required for GATE AR?

GATE registration follows GATE eligibility rules on the official portal — that is separate from job notifications. PSU/central architect jobs often add CoA on top of GATE.

Where do I update or renew registration?

Only through official CoA channels at coa.gov.in. Ignore third-party “agents” promising registration.
