LESSON 0.1 — GATE AR 2027 Syllabus Map and B1/B2 Choice

Module 0 (orientation): Read once before deep chapter study. Does not replace Lessons 1.1–14.x. Official PDF: GATE 2027 AR syllabus.

B. Why It’s Used

Candidates waste months treating 2026 section labels as current. GATE 2027 reorganised Part A into four sections and expanded each optional stream to six. Orientation prevents studying “common-only” topics that moved to B1/B2 and missing new bullets (AI/VR, municipal finance, LCA, RE feasibility).

C. Mechanism in Words

  1. Confirm you sit Architecture & Planning (AR) — not other GATE papers.
  2. Download the 2027 PDF; tick every bullet once.
  3. Study Part A for all candidates (60 marks).
  4. Choose B1 or B2 (25 marks) based on degree background and comfort — not on rumour.
  5. Map each 2027 section to APJ chapters using the spoke table; prioritise “Expanding” / new lessons (1.10, 5.9, 12.9).
  6. Use PYQs for exam craft; re-weight frequency for 2027-new topics (Lesson 14.5).

D. Core Concept Explanations

D1. B1 vs B2 Choice Heuristic

Optional stream — choose B1 or B2 (not both)B1 Architecture vs B2 Planning Optional stream — choose B1 or B2 (not both) B1 Architecture • History & theory • Climatology / envelope • Construction & structures • Building services • Digital design (BIM–AI) • Professional practice B2 Planning • Planning theory & techniques • Policy & legislation • Infrastructure & utilities • Land use & transport • Data / GIS / analytics • Municipal finance

Choose B1 if… Choose B2 if…
Strong on history, structures, services, digital design Strong on planning theory, GIS, transport, municipal finance
B.Arch-heavy studio/construction background B.Plan / planning electives background
Prefer B1.5 digital + B1.3/B1.4 building science Prefer B2.5 analytics + B2.6 finance

Either stream is valid; pick one and drill it — do not half-prepare both.

D2. New-in-2027 Must-Touch List

Stream Topics APJ entry
A.2 LCA, circular economy, UHI systematics L3.1, L3.6
A.4 RE feasibility, market, phasing L5.9
B1.5 AI, VR/AR, generative, fab L1.10 (BIM in L1.9)
B1.6 Journalism, industrial arch, building economics, interiors L2.7
B2.5 Inferential stats, Python, ML, IoT, SDI L12.4
B2.6 Municipal bonds, rating, CBA, O&M L12.9

E. Parameter Table

Section Marks
GA 15
Part A 60
B1 or B2 25
Total 100

F. Application Zones

Use this lesson in week 0 of prep; revisit after mock tests when deciding whether to switch B1/B2 (usually do not switch late).

G. Common Confusions

Confusion Correction
Part A is still 55 marks 60 marks in current pattern
Optional stream is 30 marks 25 marks
Must study both B1 and B2 Attempt one optional block

H. Compare & Contrast

2026 framing 2027 framing
Older Part A topic lists A.1–A.4 explicit
Thinner digital / finance bullets B1.5 and B2.6 expanded

I. Memory Hooks

  • 15 + 60 + 25 = 100
  • Four A’s common; six B’s optional
  • New gaps: digital · RE · LCA · stats · municipal finance

J. Revision Ladder

One line: Orient to 2027 PDF → Part A → pick B1 or B2 → map to APJ lessons → PYQ with 2027 overlay.

L. Exam Traps

Trap Fix
Studying only coaching notes dated pre-2027 Cross-check official PDF
Ignoring GA 15 marks are cheap if practised

M. Answer-Writing Cues

“GATE AR 2027 retains GA 15 + Part A 60 + one optional stream 25. Part A is organised as A.1–A.4; Architecture (B1) and Planning (B2) each have six sections. Candidates should map preparation to the official PDF and choose only one optional stream.”

N. PYQ Integration

Use year-wise papers for craft; treat 2027-new topics as definition/classification until post-2027 keys exist.
