GATE AR vs other GATE papers and recruitment exams
GATE AR is the architecture-and-planning paper in the GATE family. Graduates sometimes compare it with CE, EE, or “XE” papers, or with state PSC Assistant Town Planner exams. This page clarifies differences so you pick the right exam for your degree and career goal.
GATE AR vs other GATE papers
| Comparison | GATE AR | Other GATE (e.g. CE, EE) |
|---|---|---|
| Who | B.Arch / B.Plan and allied built-environment graduates | Typically B.Tech / B.E. in that discipline |
| Syllabus | Planning, housing, GIS, transport, governance | Core engineering science for that branch |
| Admissions | M.Arch, M.Plan, some interdisciplinary programmes | M.Tech in that engineering branch |
| Dual paper | Some years allow two papers — check brochure for permitted pairs with AR | Same — subject to annual rules |
Sitting the wrong paper wastes a year: choose the paper that matches your degree and target programme, not which paper seems “easier” online.
GATE AR vs state PSC Assistant Town Planner
| GATE AR | State PSC ATP / planner posts | |
|---|---|---|
| Purpose | Postgraduate admission, some PSUs, national score | Direct state government job recruitment |
| Conducting body | GATE committee (IIT/IISc cycle) | State PSC (BPSC, MPPSC, etc.) |
| Syllabus | National AR syllabus | State notification + often general studies |
| Outcome | Score card for institutes/employers | Appointment to advertised post |
Many planners pursue both over a career: GATE AR for higher studies, PSC exams for state jobs. APJ lists live architecture and planning jobs; state exam hubs will be added when copy exists (see deferred govt sub-hubs).
GATE AR vs undergraduate entrance exams
NATA, JEE Paper 2, and similar tests are for admission to B.Arch / B.Planning after school. GATE AR is for graduates. APJ does not publish NATA prep — scope is graduate and postgraduate only.
Which exam should you prioritise?
- M.Arch / M.Plan next year → prioritise GATE AR; align prep with GATE AR course
- State ATP notification live now → prioritise that PSC syllabus; use jobs section for deadlines
- PSU requiring GATE in a specific branch → read the notification literally (sometimes CE, not AR)
