What is GATE AR? Eligibility, dates & exam pattern

GATE Architecture & Planning (AR) is a national-level examination conducted under the GATE committee (IIT/IISc on behalf of the Ministry of Education). It tests aptitude and technical knowledge for candidates with architecture and planning backgrounds. Scores are used for admission to postgraduate programmes, some PSU recruitments, and research fellowships — always confirm the current-year brochure on the official GATE portal.

Who GATE AR is for

APJ targets degree holders — not school-level undergraduate entrance tests.

  • B.Arch / B.Planning graduates applying for M.Arch, M.Plan, or allied postgraduate programmes
  • Working professionals in architecture, urban planning, housing, or development authorities who need a valid GATE score for career moves
  • Researchers comparing GATE AR with discipline-specific papers or state PSC town-planner recruitments

You typically need a recognised four-year professional degree (or equivalent approved by the conducting authority). Final-year students may be eligible in the year they complete the degree — check the official eligibility clause each cycle.

What GATE AR measures

The paper is computer-based and combines:

  • General Aptitude (GA) — language, data interpretation, and reasoning common to all GATE papers
  • Architecture & Planning core — planning theory, housing, development controls, geospatial tools, transport, governance, and related technical topics per the official syllabus

Marking, duration, and sectional structure follow the GATE committee’s published pattern for that year. Do not rely on third-party “leaked” patterns; use only the official information brochure and syllabus PDF.

Why graduates sit GATE AR

Goal How GATE AR helps
M.Arch / M.Plan admission Participating institutes use GATE scores in their admission process (cut-offs vary by institute and category)
PSU / govt technical roles Some PSUs specify GATE-qualified candidates; verify the recruitment notification
Research / fellowship Valid score can support CSIR-UGC NET-linked pathways where GATE is accepted — confirm current rules
Career signal Demonstrates graduate-level competence in architecture and planning for employers beyond a single employer’s internal test

Key dates and registration (check annually)

GATE opens registration in a fixed window each year (application, fee payment, admit card, exam dates, answer key, and result). These dates change every cycle. Before you plan a study calendar:

  1. Download the Information Brochure from the official portal
  2. Note registration open/close, exam date, and score validity period
  3. Map backward from exam date to your revision plan (see how to prepare for GATE AR)

No. NATA and JEE Paper 2 target undergraduate admission. GATE AR is for graduates and postgraduates.

Can I appear in more than one GATE paper?

GATE rules allow two papers in some combinations in a given year — verify the current brochure for allowed pairs including AR.

Where is the official syllabus?

On the GATE portal each year. Our GATE AR syllabus article summarises sections and links to the course topics.
